2023 PGA Championship leaderboard: Live coverage, golf scores today in Round 1 at Oak Hill

The talking has ceased, and play at the 2023 PGA Championship begins with Round 1 on Thursday. With a thousand storylines on deck, the second major of the year takes center stage as Oak Hill Country Club hosts its seventh major championship. The golf course has been a star of the practice rounds, and now it's about to be joined by whoever climbs the leaderboard across the first 18 holes.

Will that be world No. 1 Jon Rahm, who will try to take a grand slam bid to the U.S. Open this summer with the 2023 Masters already in his bag? How about world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, looking to follow his green jacket and Players win last year with another big tournament victory? Perhaps it will be another top 10 star in the world like Rory McIlroy (looking for major No. 5), Jordan Spieth (looking for major No. 4) or even somebody outside the top 10 like Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas or Collin Morikawa?

Regardless of who rocks the first round, we should be in for a great major. The last half decade of PGA Championships has been incredible, and with a tough course facing a loaded field, nothing different is expected this time around.

CBS Sports will update this story with scores and highlights from the PGA Championship below. Check out the live scores at the top of this story, a more detailed leaderboard, Round 1 tee times and our complete PGA Championship TV schedule and coverage guide.

Rory's turnaround

The world No. 3 looked dead in the water after dropping to 3 over after his opening nine. An unlikely par save on No. 2 was followed by a birdie on No. 3 and all of a sudden the four-time major champion has it rolling. He has an eagle look from roughly 20 feet on the par-4 4th to get back to even par.

Hovland hops into a share of the lead

The young Norwegian has once again shown up at a major championship. Holding the first-round lead at the Masters, Hovland has his eyes on staying atop the leaderboard after 18 holes as he is now 2 under. Hovland was a member of the penultimate group Sunday of the Masters and the 150th Open this past summer.

Scheffler's steadiness

The world No. 2 is already 4-1 to win this tournament as he is 1 under thru 11 holes. Scheffler has done no wrong thus far, making 10 pars and a birdie on the drivable par-4 14th to get within one of the lead. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Jon Rahm has dropped another and turns in 2 over after three straight bogeys.

Rahm has a hiccup

After making birdie on his first to jump to 1 under, Jon Rahm was mowing through the back nine at Oak Hill in a steady manner. He has now dropped shots on 16 and 17 and finds himself at 1 over as he heads to the final hole. He still has the front side to take care of, but it has less (if any) birdie chances.

How is Oak Hill playing

With the morning wave through nine holes (on both side of the golf course), Oak Hill is roughly 3.30 shots over par. The back nine is playing slightly easier at 1.40 over par due to a susceptible stretch that includes the par-5 13th and drivable par-4 14th. The only other holes playing under par are the par-4 10th and the par-5 4th.
